It’s been a funny few days for the Batman. The Batlan (copyright R1s1ngs0n) series might well be the biggest Warner cash grab ever! Says he that has preordered this collection, wants Manta and will be on Blufans too.  It has an insane draw that series… 😆

You're talking to a Batman simp here. I'll purchase any Batman film an infinite amount of times lmao.

On a whim, I went to see The Batman yesterday night, right after finishing work.

Overall, I quite liked it and found the first half of the movie among the best in the whole Bat franchise. Wonderful cinematography with a dark, brooding atmosphere, reminiscing of Fincher's best work. I also loved the use of a specific song that bookended the movie and the soundtrack itself was also quite memorable.

But towards the latter half, the movie begins to drag an lose focus, which is a shame and also a pretty common nitpcick I have with many 2.5-3 hour long Hollywood movies that try to cram up as much material as possible, instead of favoring better pace and editing. A tighter runtime of 2-2.5 hours would have greatly benefitted this film in my opinion.

Pattinson is very good as Batman but his Bruce can take some getting used to. Overall, he did a very good job and surely the skeptics would have had their doubts alleviated once they saw the movie.

Another standout is Colin Farrell as Penguin. Totally unrecognizable, he makes this role his own and injects a little dose of much needed humor in an otherwise very gloomy film.

Turturro is also in fine form and Kravitz is surely the best Catwoman since 'Batman Returns', although Pfeiffer still reigns supreme as Queen of the cats.

Dano as Riddler is probably my biggest disappointment with this film, both with and without a mask. A terrific actor like him should and could have made this part a contender for best modern Batman villain along with Ledger and Bane, but sadly he's anything but.

While Ledger and Hardy made their villains completely unique, charismatic characters, Dano's Riddler seems to be a mish mash of John Doe, the Zodiac killer and Bane himself (just listen to his Riddler voice and intonation), rather than a distinctive psychopath. I always say a good villain can often elevate a mediocre film, so it's a shame Dano's performance prevents an already solid movie from reaching greater heights.

All in all, an enjoyable experience and I'll definitely return watching it, this time with the wife.

    7.5

Glad you enjoyed it for the most part! Interesting you were a bit disappointed with Riddler. I think Dano did an incredible job and did his research on the latest iterations and interpretations in the comics. I feel like he took that material and made it his own. Hopefully the wifey enjoys it during your next viewing!

LOL! Okay, okay...my best synopsis if I worked for WB Marketing:

A CIA Protagonist faces off with an enemy organization who utilizes time inversion, the ability to reverse time. Can the Protagonist prevent cataclysmic destruction? You have to watch the film like 3 times to answer that question. Good luck. - WB Marketing

That's good to hear! I've just ordered the HMV steelbook so will watch it for a second time when that arrives 😊

I've also not watched Rises in many years so will need to rewatch that too for comparison.

I love Rises, but it had a few plot holes and inconsistencies. And how they did Bane was dirty. I would say it at least ties with Rises or is a smidge better.

Pickups over the last week or so. Feels really good to add La La Land and The Prestige to my collection. Tenet is my very first premium blind buy (not making a habit of it), since it’s Nolan and it restocked on Collectong a few weeks ago, I couldn’t leave it behind. I’ll watch it soon. Can’t wait to open Whiplash, the steelbook looks beautiful from photos I’ve seen of it. Have 4K discs on the way to add to The Prestige and Whiplash, and already picked up/added a 4K disc to La La Land.

You’ve never seen Tenet? 🥲 You’re in for a treat. Just make sure to bring a pen and paper to keep track of everything. 😂

    High Five Friendship GIF

    Well put!

So interesting! I thought the third act is the weakest (and I don’t mean that in a bad way it’s still phenomenal), but it becomes a bit more generic. But the whole film is incredible overall! But the whole film is incredible overall!
