  1. Week 20!

    IMG_20230206_161718.thumb.jpg.70f729ab59d7e210610c836f41000faf.jpg

    DVD-for-Blu-Ray

"Crime and Punishment" (1970) - The definitive adaptation, demanding a Criterion restoration!

"The Flight" - My favorite Soviet film! Incredible, and gorgeous! Deserves better AV.

"Hey Ram" - Awesome movie, awful DVD! Lousy AV, and it doesn't even have subtitles for the musical numbers.

"Manto" (2018) - It's a new movie, and no Blu-Ray. It looks great, but how does it look better on Netflix in this day and age?

"Super Deluxe" - Seriously, India needs to step up the home media game. This masterpiece deserves a premium Blu-Ray!

    IMG_20230206_163921.thumb.jpg.2423bc760e8293eb0acb253bb4e71dc2.jpgBlu-Ray-for-Steelbook

"127 Hours" - Brilliant movie, would look great as a streel.

"Anthropoid" - One of the best movies of that year. It has a really sleek aesthetic, too, worthy of an elite edition.

"Bad Times at the El Royale" - THE best film of that year. I don't care what everyone else says! It needs a swanky premium!

"Contact" - A classic, and Warner Bros. Come on, Manta, get on that!

"Jarhead" - So many gorgeous Sam Mendes steels out there. Why not for this modern military masterpiece?

"Suburra" - Fabulous crime epic! It would also be a really cool steel.

  2. Week 19!

Wrapping up each decade from the '70s to the '10

    IMG_20230130_162206.thumb.jpg.c14b1478934a4ba6a23b0766f4ccbf1f.jpg

1979 - "Christ Stopped at Eboli" - "Apocalypse Now" is kinda played out!

1989 - "Born on the Fourth of July" - Conveniently has retrospective packaging!

1999 - "The Insider" - I've showed off enough of my other favorite films of the that year!

2009 - "Taking Woodstock" - I'm on a role with these standard cases!

2019 - "Super Deluxe" - I liked the irony of the most recently released movie being on DVD. Come on, India, step up that distribution game!

I supposed the '90s are my favorite, for the nostalgia and ambitions of the time

I started collecting movies in my teens. My 20s is when I started getting serious about it.

  3. Week 17!

    Buddy Action!

    IMG_20230119_235119.thumb.jpg.3e52259df8b452ceb8ea3c6500052679.jpg

    "1917" - Schofield & Blake"

"Spartacus" - Spartacus & Antonius... plus a whole bunch of Spartacuses. ...Spartaci?

    IMG_20230119_235228.thumb.jpg.5768ac0836692dbb56cd35d392ad2173.jpg

"The Incredibles" - Mr. & Mrs. Incredible, and the rest

"Anthropoid" - Irish Jozef Gabčík & Northern Irish Jan Kubiš

    IMG_20230119_234226.thumb.jpg.fb34e7bcf217692189dd08957296a931.jpg

"Sicario" - Graver & Gillick, but Macer appears to be doing all the work.

Plenty of action movies to choose from, but if at the moment, I'm really wanting a premium of...

    "Everything Everywhere All at Once"!

Very nice! Any estimation on the price of this and King Kong? These wooden box sets sound so cool!

As I learned by accident the other day, price can only be discussed in private messaging, ostensibly with a moderator. I myself just panicked and pulled the trigger of "Shawshank". Here's hoping it's not $300+... but it's just so beautiful. Get busy livin', I reckon.

  5. Week 16

SOME of my favorite films, in no particular order... And really only 10 movies I haven't done to death on these challenges!

  6. Week 15!

“Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!”

    IMG_20221220_113554.thumb.jpg.686a39b175f03235e697a13bd79db499.jpg

    1. "Jesus of Nazareth" (The reason for the season... Other than consumerism and a totally random designation of birthday. Still technically a Christmas movie!)

    2. "A Christmas Tale" (My favorite Christmas movie, because I'm just that much of a snob)

    3. "Haider"

    4. "Siberiade"

    5. "The Revenant" (Very oddly colored snow, but it's snow. Trust me)

Next weekend or so, I’m watching stuff like "Fantastic Beasts 3" and "Something In the Dirt". I may also go see "Babylon" (Because I'm just that much of a snob), though I don’t know of anyone who would want to join me for a three-hour-long debaucherous tragicomedy about silent movies... As for the Christmas marathons in the background, we have "Rare Exports", "Miracle on 34th Street" (1947, of course!), "The Polar Express", "Klaus", "A Boy Called Christmas", various versions of "A Christmas Carol" and "The Grinch", etc.

  7. Week 14!

    Animals!

    960x0.thumb.jpg.0dff717178717bf25be8b20eb6b907ce.jpg

    But seriously though!

If I may continue to show off my TV collection from last week...

    IMG_20221215_003444.thumb.jpg.2257349d3e733df412e8df311449202b.jpg

"Game of Thrones" - Take your pick: Stag, Direwolf, Crow, Dragon, whatever...

    IMG_20221215_004446.thumb.jpg.04451b4abaee6dedf0995a7734f07d24.jpg

"Dances with Wolves" - Horse... Oh yeah, and a wolf, of course.

    IMG_20221215_004557.thumb.jpg.df23b2c036290881372a8529cea6a65a.jpg

"Fantasia" - Anthropomorphic magician mouse counts, right?

    IMG_20221215_004226.thumb.jpg.b9110df11dbe040afd5d2ca51ea59f68.jpg

"King Kong" (2005) - Surely, a giant gorilla counts!

    IMG_20221215_003733.thumb.jpg.d9800cf781cb7a1e6f6c0d73a98737ba.jpg

    "Parasite" - Cockroach

Okay, one more, because I'm such a stickler for semantics!

    IMG_20221215_004020.thumb.jpg.e775e1c80a45202147d9b667357e4cd9.jpg

    "Parasite" - Human!

Of course, in using "Parasite" again, I broke the "One Edition Per Entry" rule. Some stickler for semantics I turned out to be.

  8. Week 13!

    My favorite TV Blu-Rays!

    IMG_20221205_164755.thumb.jpg.01fc001c007654392a75c13272c5bc9c.jpg

    "Boardwalk Empire"

    IMG_20221205_164445.thumb.jpg.b40dac5eab362aa7b6ab955f59bb8478.jpg

    "Hell on Wheels"

    IMG_20221205_164918.thumb.jpg.00243fe755153f4cf0c7858719ee50a4.jpg

    "The Leftovers"

    IMG_20221205_164615.thumb.jpg.84f2c46503067b45707cb763c6b631e6.jpg

    IMG_20221205_164306.thumb.jpg.9576854485687faa98214db408a728d4.jpg

    "Sons of Anarchy"

Other great sets where that came from, but of the TV shows I want to be on Blu-Ray, there is...

    "The Americans"

    (Really, Disney, only DVD?)

    "Homeland"

    (Really, Disney, not even DVD?)

    "Roadies"

(Well, I'm the only one who would want it on Blu-Ray/DVD anyway)

  9. WEEK 12

    Favorite directors… kinda!

    Denis Villeneuve!

Actually might not be one of my all-time faves, but he's one of my faves today. More importantly, I haven't shown off his movies in my collection.

    IMG_20221128_145359.thumb.jpg.e83dac2443fceafb77bcb9de4d91d034.jpg

    #3 - "Prisoners"

    #2 - "Blade Runner 2049"

    #1 - "Dune"

    Sam Mendes!

In honor of "Empire of Light"... which I hear is not that good. I'll believe that when I see it!

    IMG_20221128_143742.thumb.jpg.95457c789ec5625d53ef0da8297fbcb3.jpg

    #3 - "American Beauty"

    #2 - "1917"

    #1 - "Revolutionary Road"

    David Fincher!

Okay, he's so overwhelmingly my favorite director that I can't bring myself to leave it at three…

    IMG_20221128_144547.thumb.jpg.295fd16e21f36f1d33ca073b7a9a8853.jpg

    #7 - "Se7en"

    #6 - "Gone Girl"

    #5 - "The Social Network"

#4 - "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"

    #3 - "Zodiac"

    #2 - "Benjamin Button"

#1 - "Fight Club" (I know, it's a pathetic edition for one of the greatest works of modern art ever, but I'm holding out for a retailer beating Disney and putting out a premium that wouldn't require me taking out a mortgage)

Still waitin' on "Mank" there, Criterion!

  10. Week 11!

    Comin' down with that sequelitis!

    IMG_20221123_164111.thumb.jpg.b4e606a46a000257c5de43914716334d.jpg

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" - More mature than the previous movies, which were worryingly lacking in Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

    IMG_20221123_163218.thumb.jpg.9c1bf15ec5d4e160f5744aef3de1e33c.jpg

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" - More nuanced pacing than "LOTR". I mean, it dragged, but it had its moments with characterization for that.

    IMG_20221123_163455.thumb.jpg.c18041891f838e027f25783b60944eb6.jpg

"Skyfall" - So much more refined and well-written than pretty much any "James Bond" movie. I'm sorry, fanboys, but grow up!

    IMG_20221123_163621.thumb.jpg.c3181695528db91f4c9fba5c08263534.jpg

"Spider-Man: No Way Home" - Much more dramatically defined than its predecessors.

    IMG_20221123_163539.thumb.jpg.8cc99a433302a19ce87560c33afca027.jpg

"War for the Planet of the Apes" - A fantastic war movie that just happens to be about talking primates, instead of the simply well-made genre movies that preceded.

As for movies that need a sequel… I'm sure there's one that's more qualified, but let's have Richard Linklater dump another few years into "Manhood". Ellar Coltrane needs the work, and Ethan Hawke needs to hit rock bottom with his workaholism.

And a Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Americans!

  11. WEEK 10!

    Shoop, shoop! Please come again!

    Bring us bullets!

    IMG_20221114_144144.thumb.jpg.7f9c6e83657739d27a211c5493c662e1.jpg

    "Sicario" - Various Firearms

Now for Steelbooks, front and back!IMG_20221114_144011.thumb.jpg.3acf30351a7f1fea84da16302133590b.jpg

    "The Departed" - Handgun

    "Kingdom of Heaven" - Sword

And finally, because I love Russell Crowe so much...IMG_20221114_144338.thumb.jpg.2f88d1bc0c697275ef102f7f8debc46b.jpg

"Master and Commander" & "Gladiator" - Sword

Now, it took me so long to get to this theme because I couldn't really think of any best or worst weapons. I guess I'll cop out and go with what's off the top of my head.

For my bad weapon, well I recently saw "eXistenZ"...

    7744CBAA-8C9F-4311-A79C-303055C5426A-e1585387433706-1016x1024.thumb.jpeg.17d50385421ccb327e03c42c2b4dc1be.jpeg

What was up with that stupid, creepy organic gun? It wasn't even that gory! Come on, Cronenberg! Lame!

And as for favorite weapon... I dunno...

Franz Daltrey's piano flamethrower in "Lisztomania"?lisztomania3.jpg.1ff242cf737c250bfbd0a84ae6449f86.jpg

I recently got a cool edition of "A Clockwork Orange", so I wanted to say that the bust Alex used on that cat lady made for a pretty effective weapon. But come on, people, let's keep it PG!

  12. Week 9!

For the record (As it were), I'm about as big a music buff as I am a movie buff... but I'm ashamed to say that I haven't had the money, need or property space to collect many physical copies of albums. Besides, collecting soundtrack albums has always seemed a bit too novel to me. I'm sure I've gotten a few somewhere along the way, but as far as getting something to complement my movie collection...

    IMG_20221108_234546.thumb.jpg.14bf96c14eb62915dc1d855b7f219b22.jpgIMG_20221108_234644.thumb.jpg.17fd20e13383de4275bb011708b78502.jpg

I couldn't help but order what was then the most deluxe CD edition of Woodstock '69 along with my Blu-Ray of Michael Wadleigh's "Woodstock". ...That's it. That's the story.

Otherwise, my soundtracks have been incidental extras with my movies.

"Almost Famous" (Okay, it's just the Stillwater sampler CD. I may get the full soundtrack someday just because of my fervent love of the film.)

    IMG_20221108_233705.thumb.jpg.c62ecfef6bf42f4fbf70ddaced3feb2c.jpgIMG_20221108_233750.thumb.jpg.ddc61f6f51fe25518988c19169653788.jpg

By the way... Broadway... Uncool, man!

"Gone with the Wind" (Sorry, another sampler)

    IMG_20221108_233300.thumb.jpg.d5c5f7062dd65c95dd33c2bc9a7644e5.jpgIMG_20221108_233351.thumb.jpg.8298cffb26283df222e459137e970953.jpg

    IMG_20221108_233433.thumb.jpg.7065a505a7f7d23cb243e78b3fe211a7.jpg

    "Forrest Gump"

    IMG_20221108_234014.thumb.jpg.b3309026318f36a77e1d845f997eb635.jpgIMG_20221108_234105.thumb.jpg.5d0343fa52c13dd1cbbbeb1adc85b30d.jpg

And that's about all I've got. If I may use a loophole... nobody said anything about not including soundtracks that were a bonus feature on a Blu-Ray disc...

    "Inception"

    IMG_20221108_234942.thumb.jpg.1870ae24f1e6a74e4f59470f1dbbfddb.jpgIMG_20221108_235035.thumb.jpg.c0893a117d3573094923dd7abdc6e203.jpgIMG_20221108_235248.thumb.jpg.b4d5b0d4c25218ec18b19f8dd4f02698.jpg

Yes, I know, my "Inception" steel is horribly outdated. Stay tuned to see if I get enough disposable income for a 4K premium.

  13. Week 7 challenge failed! No! I need to get more horror movies!

    Week 8... I've got this!

    IMG_20221031_155107.thumb.jpg.fc98131d6006eff8bee5b708ec6a2f3d.jpg

Red - "From Dusk Till Dawn"

Orange - "A Clockwork Orange" (Why yes, I did just get it!)

    Yellow - "The Half-Blood Prince"

Green - "The Order of the Phoenix"

Light Blue - "Manchester by the Sea"

Dark Blue - "Betty Blue" (Blue-blue-blue!)

Pink - "Mr. Nobody" (Skin tone counts, right? I sure wish I had 2 grand to spend on "Fight Club" Manta OC)

That's a pretty drab, mishapen rainbow. What the heck does that mean, Bear Vasquez?

Hey, is there any consideration for selling JUST the slips for the steelbooks? It seems like it would save everyone some money, though I'd imagine there are some all-or-nothing stipulations with these distributor deals.

Oops... I forgot about all of those "Steelbook Not Included" disclaimers.

  15. "Almost Famous"!!!!!!!! One of my absolute favorite movies ever, of which I already have the gorgeous steelbook. But I'd still double-, maybe even triple-dip (OC) for the awesome presentation in my display that it deserves!

I also recently watched "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and "The Northman", and wouldn't mind some fancy premiums for their steelbooks before I buy them.

"Kingdom of Heaven" would also be cool. But I think it's Disney's problem now, so fat chance!

  16. Challenge #6

This one is tough. Let's go with…

    IMG_20221018_173211.thumb.jpg.0447dcc7fced56662500785afd556443.jpg
"Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The" & "Army of Shadows, The"

    IMG_20221018_170634.thumb.jpg.ff258c4ddd76356e879756d03c8b754e.jpg
"Milk" & "What's Eating Gilbert Grape"

    IMG_20221018_170801.thumb.jpg.96326bc05c41c6532f555ce46f77c5f5.jpg
"JFK" (Not technically premium, but still a great set!)

    IMG_20221018_171151.thumb.jpg.199a0a52e6cb4c0843ca123a76d46b7e.jpg
"Once Upon a Time in America", "Haider" & "Nicholas and Alexandra" (Standard Blu-Rays, but rare ones!)

    And… Erm…

    IMG_20221018_173418.thumb.jpg.1f44d3e207356ffbd9b018fb07fdcd80.jpg

    '95's "La Haine" & '54's "Seven Samurai"

And now, the epic story of where I came up with the username camwjohn95!

Picture this… It was a scorching day in Alabama in '95, and I was named Cam, with the middle initial W., by a couple whose last name started with John… And that's it. Did you catch all of the complex allegorical symbols in that Fassbinderian opus?

  17. Challenge #5

I don't remember what I got or when I got it these past ten years, but I can think of some early gets that "evolved" me as a collector.

    1. "Les Miserables" (Target) - "Oh hey, that's a fancy edition in this store. I should get more of these."

    IMG_20221011_003439.thumb.jpg.3ae57b3e494bef60f85c66dfc6daa341.jpg

    2. "Cleopatra" (Multi-Retail) - "Oh cool, a Japanese 'Premium' edition. I hope it's not cheaper on a separate website."

    IMG_20221011_003800.thumb.jpg.c1040f97a88e66be4adf98c68852e792.jpg

    3. "Birdman" (FilmArena) - "I'm glad I spotted that. It's gorgeous. I should keep up with this website."

    IMG_20221011_003827.thumb.jpg.9b878b1b3629672c3be5a86f7969c1eb.jpg

    4. "Whiplash" (Kimchi) - "These things are awesome! I can't wait to get more!"

    5. "Pulp Fiction" (Nova Media) - "I just spent how much for three copies of the same Blu-Ray? Just because they have different slip cases? Well, I guess this is my thing now..."

@camwjohn95 Very nice, the 30th anniversary tin box edition - beside MAG still the best edition for this impressive movie. 👍 Did you exchange the disc from this edition (I guess this was German only?)

I had also thought about to taking this edition for the challenge, but decided against it.

    Regards, Wolfgang

I really lucked up on an eBay purchase for a great price... even came with an Australian candy bar! I did keep all of the discs and got an inexpensive UK Blu-Ray. Oh, but I couldn't resist getting that "Complete Edition" Blu-Ray!

And after all that trouble... The MAG release gets released, and I missed out on it! Why'd you have to remind me of that, man?
