Studio Ghibli Ultimate Blu-ray Steelbook Guide

Hi my friends;

The booklet in the Miyazaki set is essentially separate chapters on the "making of" each of the 11 films and a brief history of the man with the studio.

It's in English and a fascinating read.

The Digibook within the box has distinct artwork dedicated to each film with a separate "sleeve" in which each of the Blu-rays are housed.

The cover of the digibook feels like leather and is quite luxurious.

That "film strip" you see encircling the box, is a removable band that includes a film cell from each film.

The set also includes a bonus disc that includes interviews with Miyazaki and excerpts of how they animated each film.

Yeah, pretty happy happy with this...?

@Hatori @xSNAKExPLISSKENx Yeah JB Hifi is where I got a few of mine from.  They're not retailer exclusive so can also be purchased at www.sanity.com.au as well.  Sadly a few of these are already out of print being limited editions.  I just recently had to grab Kiki's off Ebay.  Ponyo is the next one to come out in the next couple of weeks so hopefully there'll be more released in the near future.

Wow. Thank you @extantsrevenge for this really great guide. I wished I've seen this post sooner, just some weeks ago, when deciding that I am finally ready to buy my first Studio Ghibli movie (giving up on the idea to get the Japanese digipak editions due to their price tag) I tried figuring out which are the best Ghibli movies (did a weighted ranking using different sources) and in what editions they are available - so basically I did everything you already had done. Could have saved some time - especially because yours is much nicer... here's my version of it :D

Also many thanks to @Skid Mark for sharing these beautiful editions - I did come along those when I researched on my own but I didn't know how big they are, what's in the package and how beautiful everything is. Especially the coins look so much more stunning then the ones in the German steelbooks. This is really something to look out for! :)

Happy that you like the guide @pygospa 👍. And you have not seen a single Ghibli Movie yet? I'm getting really excited for you as this will be (hopefully) an terrific expierence for you.

My ranking for the Ghibli movies would be

1: Grave of the Fireflies (1988) 10/10 The best Anime ever made, but also the saddest movie ever made. You should not start with this one. I cry like a little baby from the first picture until the end 🤣

2: Princess Mononoke (1997) 10/10 Perfection, absolutely beautiful.

3: My Neighbor Totoro (1988) 10/10 The best children movie ever created. Totoro and the Kids are so cute, funny and loveable. You have a smile on your face the whole movie.

4: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) 10/10 The only sad thing is that the movie only has the beginning of the whole story from the Manga (which you only know, when you have read the Manga). The Manga for this is my favorite Manga ever. I love it so much.

5: Castle in the Sky (1986) 10/10 I like the movie each time I see it more and more. Don't know how that is possible but it is 😊

6: Spirited Away (2001) 10/10 In every way another great movie. Love it.

7: Whisper of the Heart (1995) 10/10 This is a small story, but it is made so beautiful that you simply love everything about it.

These 7 are in a league of their own. In fact they are all in my Top 50 favorite movies (and that includes every live action).

8: Howl's Moving Castle (2004) 10/10 Also a great movie, but I wish they had explored the world more.

9: Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) 10/10 Lovely, adorable, fun, Kiki is awesome.

10: The Secret World of Arrietty (2010) 10/10 I was surprised how much I liked this movie, it is terrific.

11: Porco Rosso (1992) 10/10 Only something Miyazaki could have pulled off. Very nice.

12: Only Yesterday (1991) 10/10 A smaller movie, with a normal real life story, but done in the best way possible.

13: When Marnie Was There (2014) 9/10 This is very nicely done film and I liked it a lot.

14: The Wind Rises (2013) 9/10 I was a little disapponted as this was supposed to be the last Miyazaki (thankfully he is making another one) and I was hoping for something big. It is a movie only Miyazaki could have made, but I think it is not for all audiances.

15: Ponyo (2008) 9/10 The weakest Miyazaki movie. The animation style is not so strong and the story is missing something.

16: From Up on Poppy Hill (2011) 9/10 This is certainly not a movie for everyone as it is a very specific Story. But Ghibli excels in doing something like that and it is presented in a great way.

17: Pom Poko (1994) 8/10 This one is a little weird, but still enjoyable.

18: Tales from Earthsea (2006) 8/10 Could have been epic, but somehow it felt like missing something. Did not enjoy the characters that much (might have been the problem of the source material).

19: The Cat Returns (2002) 8/10 Animations not as good as on other Ghibli movies and the story is also not that strong.

20: Ocean Waves (1993 TV Movie) 8/10 A smaller movie, it's okay for a TV movie.

21: The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013) 6/10 Sadly Isao Takahata choose again to use animations that are not really fitting for a Ghibli movie, not so great.

22: My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999) 5/10 I honestly did no like this one, because the animations are not what they are supposed to be on a Ghibli movie, the story could also not deliver as much.

Guest Daniel_DOA4

I got all studio ghibli steelbooks from uk and just went on this website to see when the next titles would be released. Thanks to you I preordered arrietty & the wind rises off zavvi! I also have arrietty USA version (different voice cast) which works on uk bluray players, and the my neighbour Totoro 30th anniversary collectors edition. Most of mine are sealed as I have duplicates of the normal bluray+DVD double play editions but some are open (the first dvd included steelbooks) and those I have duplicates of.

I only have one special edt sleeve and that is of when marnie was there. I don’t have all the movies but have most of them. I also have Mary & the witch’s flower but that’s studio ponoc. Thanks for creating this page!

Hi everyone! Finally a place where I can also see my addiction is normal! Ha

Zavvi uk have just in the past hour released preorder for Pom poko steelbook.

My collection (sealed) is almost complete just missing a copy of nausicaa and I’ll be up to date!  Shame I have had to get a lot from eBay, costing me a small fortune!

I have a 6 month old daughter and when she’s older I plan on giving them all to her 🤗

This thread caused me to go a bit Steelbook crazy on eBay and start my own collection! Awesome stuff 😅

After just a couple of hours of viewing these are now on the way:

Spirited Away
Porco Rosso
Whisper of the Heart
Cat Returns

So I definitely got carried away. Not realising Arrietty & The Wind Rises were still available on Zavvi. I ended up paying more than necessary on eBay 😅

Still! I couldn't wait to post a picture. In a few days I'll have all the factory sealed UK releases aside from Princess Mononoke (I truly hope one pops up) 😍

Also going to treat myself to a few of my favourites such as Amelie, Oldboy, Interstellar, Seven Samurai, Kung Fu Hustle & Battle Royale (Artwork on the last two convinced me).
