I thought it worked for the most part.  I don't 100% buy that novack's character would go through with what he did with the killer and his podcast materials, but it worked thematically and made the story that much more interesting.

Yeah I really hated it lol. Watched it so I could decide if I wanted to buy a slip from that The On release or not. I stated the same in my review, but I have an issue with this director and his obsession/obvious fetish with the degradation and sexual assault of women. It's going on three movies now where he involves sexual assault of women just because (and usually in graphic and/or brutal means) and I don't like it. Showgirls (horribly graphic), Elle (literally the entire plot and also graphic), and now Benedetta. Just don't like this guy because of his pattern and his horrible filmmaking at times

Yeah well said.  My experience exactly.  I did give credit to Novack for having the balls to do that though, as you said.  Risky.

 

If he would have shot his buddy John Mayer for that gratuitous opening cameo, that would have kicked it up a notch higher.

Funny enough I've seen the remake but I've never seen the original! I enjoyed the remake it was just schlocky fun. I have a long watchlist though, over 2000 movies I need to see hahaha

I totally get it and you're not alone in that critique of Verhoeven.  While I may disagree with you, I totally get your opinion and it's entirely valid.
