Challenge #18

Thank you, @Mrdugan

1) 2046 (Wonk Kar Wai)

20230123-001554.jpg

I have several books of various Wong Kar Wai films, and several books of photographs by Christopher Doyle. In this case, the merchandising is a photo book, a book of postcards, and a keyring. Yes, the keychain.

2) 2001, A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick)

20230123-001848.jpg

The film. I have more material about the film in books about Kubrick and his works, and I would have more about 2001 if I could.

3) Hero (Zhang Yimou)

20230123-002023.jpg

I always liked this film, both for its martial arts side and for its aesthetic, poetic side. This box is a limited and numbered edition of Christopher Doyle's plates with images from the film.

4) Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola)

20230123-002345.jpg

A film that I have always loved, but that I am more passionate about the more time passes. Here it is with a book of the original story by Joseph Conrad, a book about the film, a Spanish numbered collector's edition that includes a book about the making of the film inside; and, finally, Eleanor Coppola's book about the film.

5) Ashes of time + The Grandmaster (Wong Kar Wai)

20230128-035030.jpg

20230128-035617.jpg

They are two Wong Kar Wai films, both about martial arts, both with ceramic drinking utensils, and I thought they should go together.

The mug and cups from "Ashes of time" are even nicer in the camano; the tea set from "The Grandmaster" is small but elegant. As for the films, "The Grandmaster" always seemed to me to be an underrated film; and I have only seen one of the 3 official cuts of the film. Hopefully one day there will be a collector's edition, and if possible, all the cuts will be included.

Why did I select these 5 pieces of merchandising?

If I'm honest, I don't have much to choose from. I've never been a big fan of merchandising in terms of figures, I like to see them... but I don't usually buy them for myself; and what I have are books, and some prints/posters.

I really think it's a failure of the industry that there isn't more merchandising of certain types of films beyond blockbusters, it would be very interesting.

Decades, of which I have four and a half, are going by faster now than they have before! I reach out from the swirling flow of time and try to hold on to fleeting moments, like this one, where I share films from the decades with you fine people! I decided to go all Criterion for this challenge!

1935: The 39 Steps

1948: Bicycle Thieves

1954: Seven Samurai

1964: The Great Escape

1975: Picnic at Hanging Rock

1983: The Big Chill

1999: Being John Malkovich

2001: The Royal Tenenbaums

2016: Personal Shopper

My favorite movie decade has to be the 80s! From Breakfast Club to Back to the Future, from The Terminator to Predator, most of my favorite movies are 80s! Thanks for looking!

@extantsrevenge was I able to get my week 18 challenge submitted correctly and on time?

Ok - here we go!

1. Doctor Who: I have some fun things.  First off, I didn’t want to use TV shows in case they were against the rules, so luckily I happen to own the 1965 film version, Dr. Who and the Daleks.  Regardless, I have a ton of Doctor Who merch.  Fortunately the TARDIS spans both film and television.  Below you’ll find a variety of TARDIS collectables - all gifted to me by my wife.  In addition, you’ll see some VERY rare Doctor Who Funko Pop of Doctors from the television show.

Copies of both my Dr. Who and the Daleks Steelbooks are below - as well as my complete Steelbook collection of the entire series from 2004 to present.  It’s my most cherished Steelbook set.

2. Marvel’s The Avengers: This isn’t to show of my Steelbook (Blufans) as much as it is to show off my LEGO Helicarrier.

3. Spider-man: No Way Home:  I actually have Funko Pop from every MCU Spider-man movie and more.  What started as a collection of only Peter Parker or unmasked Spidey has grown into nearly all Spider-Man Pop figures from all his MCU appearances.  Included are many Chase pieces.  I also have a very rare black and white Fugitive Toys Exclusive of the original Spider-man Funko Pop. Also notice my modest Wolverine collection, as well as my complete Goose/Flerken collection.

Paired with my black and white Pop is the Blufans Collectors Steelbook.

4. Back the Future:  SAVE THE CLOCK TOWER! These movie moment Funko were amazing - Marty with the Delorean and Doc at the Clock Tower.  I lucked into the Delorean for retail well after release and it has sense exploded in value.  I ordered the Clock Tower on its opening Prerelease day, and I waited over 2 years for it to get to me. 81B74649-7278-4272-9210-873C474B4D1C.thumb.jpeg.e0f6e47e52b118562f2457705f5456c4.jpeg

The Steelbook is the Target trilogy release:

5. Raiders of the Lost Ark & Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: I won’t lie.  I paid a pretty penny for these two exceptionally rare Funko Pop.  The Raiders is a San Diego Comic Con exclusive (I also have exclusives from SDCC - Twelfth Doctor in Spacesuit,  Thirteenth Doctor in Trench Coat, Ted Lasso, and Taika Waititi).  The Temple of Doom is a Disney Park exclusive.  Included are the UK/Zavvi Steelbooks.

6. Up and 42: Extra Credit are another set of Pops and a McFarlane baseball statue.  I have every Funko Pop of Carl and Ellie (together) released, as well as the house.  They’re fun sets.  I also have the black and white Chase statue of Jackie Robinson.  Up is the Blufans premium, and 42 is an amaray in a slipcase from Best Buy.

years-years-passed.gif

Normally I would have started with Star Wars too @lunazero, but I thought that I show that so often, that I can take a different approche this time.

Nice @R1s1ngs0n , I have M too (completely forgot as the movie is not yet added to my collection list, waiting for a rewatch). Counting the movies for each decade sounds like fun 😁

😲 I don't know The Rules of the Game @hal56. Great to see titles in this challenge that are otherwise not really used.

Awesome @cypheria078 with the WCL Editions used 😍, you too @Reagh ☺️

Next week comes your moment @Fortis93 and the 10th point 👍

@Veum when did you start collecting movies?

@bossjon yeah it is really horrible how fast the time runs 😂 for me Mad Max Fury Road feels like I saw it yesterday in cinema.

@BreakBeatDJ @bilbon @ethnosax @mpmarcel @InfiniteDoors @Chief_lookout @Cornrow 🙏

Thanks so much for your submission and the interesting background info @nerdist

Hope we get lots of cool entries this week, everyone not participating is getting a visit at the end of the week

@extantsrevenge Nils 🤷‍♂️ I suspect in the VHS era since we still have them… collected some here and there but work took up

too much of our time and then we were too Tired Tv Land GIF by TV Land Classic

You have me a bit worried here. If your challenge is for us to post several editions of movies that feature underwater action, then I’m royally screwed 😅

I think I would be screwed too if I were to come up with such a challenge. 😄

Media Psychos Challenge Week 19 - Through The Decades

Thanks @lunazero for a great challenge.  For my submission I tried to capture every decade but, sadly, discovered I had a gap and had no films from 1910s in my collection.  Will have to pick up some Charlie Chaplin classics at some point.

I also limited my selections to Horror (duh) and tried to pick either premiums or films I hadn’t shown before.

Trip to the moon (Arrow) - 1900s

Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari (Eureka!) - 1920s

Wizard of Oz (Black Barons) - 1930s

Wolf Man (Steelbook) - 1940s

Diabolique (Criterion) - 1950s

Seconds (Criterion) - 1960s

Suspiria (9 disc box set including original and remake and soundtracks) - 1970s

Possession (Le Chat Qui Fume) - 1980s

Se7en (Manta) - 1990s

Martyrs (Umbrella) - 2000s

Mandy (Steelbook) - 2010s

Empty Man (Custom Pressing since this ISN’T ON PHYSICAL MEDIA!!!) - 2020s

0F6B60BA-5012-4C75-B859-3543FD4A48CE.thumb.jpeg.d50350185ac6452bd5c2885ddbbc9600.jpeg

***edited to add answers-

i started collecting by taping movies off of cable in the 80s and then I got a laserdisc player in 1990 at a flea market.  First two discs I bought were blade runner and godfather.  Soon I discovered criterion.

My favorite film decade is probably 1975-1985.   Yeah I’m cheating.  Best film decade is the 70s but more of my favorites came out in the early 80s.

Week 19!

Wrapping up each decade from the '70s to the '10

IMG_20230130_162206.thumb.jpg.c14b1478934a4ba6a23b0766f4ccbf1f.jpg

1979 - "Christ Stopped at Eboli" - "Apocalypse Now" is kinda played out!

1989 - "Born on the Fourth of July" - Conveniently has retrospective packaging!

1999 - "The Insider" - I've showed off enough of my other favorite films of the that year!

2009 - "Taking Woodstock" - I'm on a role with these standard cases!

2019 - "Super Deluxe" - I liked the irony of the most recently released movie being on DVD. Come on, India, step up that distribution game!

I supposed the '90s are my favorite, for the nostalgia and ambitions of the time

I started collecting movies in my teens. My 20s is when I started getting serious about it.

@Blu Magic Ray @Gary K @camwjohn95

Best Movie of the decade that is a bold statement @Steelbook Indy you did pick many beloved movies, I really like several of these too, but would have not picked any as best of the decade. Wizard of Oz, might fight for worst on my list 😂

@nexusjuan sorry I forgot to give you the award before 😅

Only 5 submissions in the last few days 😪.

Challenge 19: “Through the Decades - a Cinematic Journey”

The Godfather: 1972

It’s my second favourite movie of all time, my first time watching it completely blew me away and from that point this movie set the bar for what I call a good movie.

Back to the Future: 1985

Just a bunch of good childhood memories really with this one.

Perfect Blue: 1997

This was just a rollercoaster of a movie, went into this knowing nothing and finished the movie like 😮.

5 Centimetres Per Second: 2007

Simply beautiful animation from the great director Makoto Shinkai.

Hell or High Water: 2016

My second favourite of the Frontier Trilogy, Chris Pine & Ben Foster were absolutely perfect for this movie.

As for what is my favourite cinematic decade, now that’s tough. This requires some serious sit down time for me to see everything I like and from what decade they are from, I’ll reply back to this post once I figure out the answer.
