No Time To Die (2021)

I grew up watching Bond and loved those movies! I even did an oral report Ian Fleming in British Literature class in HS and dressed up as 007. I really liked the Brosnan bond movies though Die Another Day was meh. When Craig took over and did Casino Royale, at first I didn't like the new Bond or the movie since it was different. It was until Quantum of Solace that I actually started to like Craig and the new direction and went back to watch CR and changed my view on that movie and actually liked it at the end. I hope the next Bond will be good. I think Craig raised the bar on being 007.

Regarding Craig's films like Bond, Casino Royale and Skyfall are undoubtedly the best by far.

About all the previous films I can not comment as I have not seen them all, one day I will allow myself the pleasure.

It is probable that on Monday I will go to the cinema and see the film (or maybe Dune), I'll give my opinion then, one or the other.

Here are my first impressions after my first viewing of the movie today.

Plot - 6

Villain - 5

Bond Girl/s - 6

Action - 7

Music - 6

Sets - 8

Dialogue - 7

OVERALL SCORE - a solid 7

This is one of those movies whose overall quality is greater than the sum of its parts.

Far from perfect and contrived in some spots, but the excellent pacing and Craig’s superb performance (by far his best turn as Bond) hold it all together.

I admit I expected to be massively disappointed by this movie but I’m happy to report this is an adventure worth checking out, both for fans of the franchise and casual movie goers alike.

I realize that I have not answered this yet, so lets get started. This was after Dune only my second cinema visit after over 1 ½ years and I still can’t get that excited about going to the cinema, it certainly is not helping when they redesign the cinema and have work going on during opening hours. So the first hour of the movie I still had to endure some hammering sound from work done in other rooms.

Anyway I think the movie was a great ending to the Craig Saga. They certainly gave us things we have never seen in a Bond Movie before. Not talking about action sequences. I like to view the Craig movies separated from the other 20 movies, they always have been a relaunch for me, which they now brought to an end in a satisfying way.

Sure the Plot had some ups and downs, but overall they gave us a lot of stuff to build a big picture together with the other 4 Craig movies. I was a little surprised that the Action was missing some really big things, but it was also fitting for this rather emotional story. The casting was mainly good, with a great performance of Craig and I liked Léa Seydoux much more than I did in Spectre. Ana de Armas was nice to look at, I was a little sad to see Naomi Harris participation reduced so much, but I guess that was because of the new Agent (which I thought was one of the weaker points of the movie).

I really liked the use of the music in this, especially the integration of the old parts, that was done perfectly and added a lot to the emotional side of the movie. As for the title song, it was a rather forgetful entry, especially since I don’t like the performer.

The look of the film was as expected great and you certainly saw that they did spend a lot on everything.

Can’t really go into more detail without revealing to much of what is happening. I loved the final scene, it was actually the best way to close this.

I was undecided if I should give 9 or 10 points and in the end I went for 10 (with a little Bond and collection bonus). Was it perfect? Certainly not, but I feel like we got a huge ending and that the 5 movies together make up a great Series.

Anyway, I have absolutely no clue what  will happen now with the Bond franchise and I have the feeling that whatever comes now will be absolutely horrible. I think I need to prepare myself for not caring about further entries to the series.

I agree with practically everything you wrote. I wouldn't say the ending was the best part and I certainly did NOT like the aformentioned use of music, but everything else is spot on.

The action scenes were nothing special in terms of... well, action, but they were very atmospheric, which made them memorable (especially in the movies's first half).

Like you, I'm not holding my breath with regards to the series' future. At this point, I think the most crucial thing for the producers would be to completely change their writing team as what we've been offered during Craig's tenure was barely recognizable as Bond movies. Too self-conscious, mostly humorless and devoid of imagination.

It's time to bring the fun back into 007.

I was actually a little surprised when I saw your individual points for the music. Like I wrote, the use of the old music I found very good and the score from Zimmer was good too, surely not iconic as many of the old stuff, but I liked it. The old themes had a very positive effect for me.

I agree with you, with closing the book on the Craig Bond era, they have to move back to a more Bond Bond 😅. My fear is that in recent times the movie makers try to cater to please everyone, which makes it hard to create enjoyable movies. You could already see glimpse of this implemented here and most likely this will become more evident in the future.

The first hint of the future for Bond will be the casting and I'm already scared what awaits us.

I think this is where the last few Mission: Impossible films have supplanted the fun, spy action/adventure James Bond template (especially on the action front).

A question for you and @extantsrevenge, how would you guys rank the Craig films after watching this one?

No Time To Die

Spectre

Casino Royale

Skyfall

Quantum Of Solace (the absolute worst in the series as far as I'm concerned)

Skyfall

Casino Royale (after my last viewing it got actually very close of taking the top spot of the Craig movies and I think it will when I watch all 5 together)

No Time to Die

Spectre

Quantum Of Solace

The first 3 have 10 points, Spectre 9 and Quantum 8 with a lot of turning a blind eye.

i went to see the latest (and the last) craig bond movie at the weekend. it had its ups and downs.

UPs:

technically it is a fantastic movie. it has beautiful italy at the beginning (visually probably the most stunning part for me), interesting cuba, lovely norway (but not used enough) and villian's island in the end (sorry, if i forgot something important). cinematography is also very nice (once again - see the italy!). zimmer's music was surprisingly interesting for me - he uses the melody from the main song (that i dont like so much), he uses older motives and builds new music that sometimes reminds me of the dark knight for example (which is a plus, of course). the music gets to be monumental in some parts.

UPs and DOWNs:

action scenes are totally uneven, some of them are fantastic (fight on the stairs near the end - one-time camera shot; italy), some are total misfires ("car chase" in norway - wtf?!?). the same ups and downs is with the characters - bond, Q and M on one side (fantastic), blofeld, safin, doctor obruchev on the otherside (bad...). some characters were not used enough which is a shame (leiter, moneypenny). and for some characters i am not decided if they were good or bad (madeleine, new 007).

DOWNs:

plot and the use of villians are the weakest parts (lack of blofeld was my problem also in "spectre"; motivation of many characters (villian, doctor obruchev, agent ash) is so vague...). and the title song is nothing extra at all.

anyway, it is all wrapped in so emotional package that no other bond ever has done. all craig movies could be considered as one long story and i am really looking forward to watching them all together one day. since "casino royale" bond was a vulnerable character - physically and emotionally, no superhero. he did not change, his emotions grew, at least somewhere inside him. even after several years he still hasnt forgotten about vesper or madeleine (this includes also some betrays from them - he loves them and hates them at the same time i think - one of my best scenes was in DB5 in italy where bond and madeleine were surrounded by the enemies who where shooting at them, especially the one shooting to madeleine's window). all of these emotions are coming back to him and they culminate at the end.

to sum it up - "no time to die" is very good ending of the craig 007 era, it is technically great movie with fantastic emotional background. it only lacks the strong plot, villain and the motivations of the characters. it is great but it could have been fantastic.

7,5/10 for me.

I finally got around to watching this one.

I thought it was pretty good.

Daniel Craig seems a lot more animated in this outing than in previous entries, which I thought was an interesting decision. He gives a great, heartfelt performance here (though I'm not sure if it's the best "Bond performance"). I appreciate the writers (and director's) attempts to further develop and add depth to his character, however, it can sometimes veer into making him indistinguishable from any other action hero.

The action sequences were generally solid for the most part. However, this films suffers from the same issue that I think "Casino Royale" had in that its best action set-piece is placed at the beginning of the movie.

The plot/narrative itself was interesting with some solid stakes, albeit seeming like a mishmash of those found in previous entries. I also appreciated some of the subtle and not-so-subtle nods to previous Bond movies.

I thought the villain, Felix Leiter and Ana De Armas' Paloma (who was a welcome addition to the movie during the sequence she was in) were somewhat underused. The villain felt more like a checklist of tropes without any of the connective tissue required for him to come across as an actual character. He exists more as a backstory than anything else. However, Rami Malek does his best with the material he's given.

I enjoyed the use of exotic locations as well as the production design for parts of the villain's lair.

The Bond theme song and opening credit sequence weren't bad, but nothing memorable. And I quite liked Zimmer's score in certain places.

For an almost three-hour film, I admire it's attempt to provide a satisfying conclusion to an arc spanning five films in a way that doesn't sacrifice momentum and pacing. And the final sequence helps to bring it all home and provides a fitting send-off to Craig's tenure as the character.

I'd probably place it was my second favourite of the Craig Bond films, just behind Skyfall.

1. Skyfall

2. No Time To Die

3. Spectre

4. Casino Royale

5. Quantum of Solace

Definitely looking forward to seeing where they take this franchise from here.
