For all MGS lovers out there (like myself) this thread is for you to discuss everything related to the venerable series.

To launch the discussion, I thought we could start by ranking our favorite games and list our top 10 characters and boss battles from the franchise.

@GANTZ @ThereIsNoooSpoon I know you guys are MGS fanatics but I hope more members who love the series will join in the discussion.

Quizzes may follow as well 🙂

As expected, it was very hard for me to compile these lists (especially the characters and bosses) as I feel so many deserve a spot.

But here goes.

Favorite Games (didn't play Peace Walker)

MGS2 - a flawed game with often interminable and less than subtle dialogue, not to mention an extremely annoying character (Rose).

But when it came out it left me with my jaw on the floor. I couldn't believe such a technical achievement was possible and while the plot was over convulted and the writing self indulgent, I really loved the themes explored as well as many of the new characters.

I didn't even mind playing as Raiden for most of the game as it offered one amazing sequence after the other. Flawed, but still an unforgettable masterpiece.

MGS/MGS3 - until MGS2 and Silent Hill 2 came out in 2001, I was convinced no game could ever surpass the first MGS. It boasts the greatest collection of MGS characters, accompanied by memorable and often unforgettable boss fights.

But the greatest collection of Boss fights (arguably in video game history) undoubtely belongs to MGS3. A linear and relatively simple to follow story that introduces us to the series' most iconic character - Naked Snake aka Big Boss.

MGSV - gameplay wise it's a perfect game which gave me hundreds of hours of pure gaming bliss. The only thing preventing it from ranking higher are the lacking characters and story.

MGS4 - when it came out I was blown away by the gameplay mechanics (especially the Octocamo) but in retrospective I have to aknowledge it's the 'worst' in the series. Some of the chapters were excellent while others were far less enjoyable (Eastern Europe). Still, a worthy entry that ties nicely Solid Snake's arc.

Top 10 Characters

1. Big Boss

2. Revolver Ocelot (and to a lesser extent Ocelot, followed by Liquid Ocelot)

3. Solidus Snake

4. Solid Snake

5. Liquid Snake

6. Vamp

7. The Boss

8. The End

9. Psycho Mantis

10. Vulcan Raven

Honorable mentions:

Gray Fox

Sniper Wolf

EVA

Otacon

Meryl

Venom Snake

Top 10 Boss Battles

1. The End (MGS3) - top contender for greatest boss battle in video game history.

2. Psycho Mantis (MGS) - completely reinvented the concept of what a boss battle could and should be.

3. Solidus Snake (MGS2) - it's not even close to being the most challenging or interesting fight but I'm partial to Solidus as a character and it still feels epic in every way. Love the music.

4. The Fury (MGS3) - a superior version of the already awesome Vulcan Raven boss fight from MGS.

5. Revolver Ocelot (MGS) - the first boss fight and still one of the best and most memorable, largely thanks to that wicked introduction.

6. The Boss (MGS3) - the beautiful setting and preceding dialogue greatly enhance the battle. A fitting climax to an amazing chapter.

7. Metal Gear Rays (MGS2) - epic in scope and so satisfying when completed on extreme difficulty.

8. The Sorrow (MGS3) - is it even a boss battle? it's yet another testament to Kojima's genius... an unforgettable sequence that makes the player question his own actions.

9. Crying Wolf (MGS4) - picking off Frogs while trying to snipe a huge mechanized canine from under a truck during a snowstorm is something every gamer should experience.

10. Sahelanthropus second fight (MGSV) - one word: EPIC!

Honorable mentions:

Sniper Wolf first fight (MGS)

Fatman (MGS2)

Volgin (MGS3)

Laughing Octopus (MGS4)

Camouflage Unit/Female Skulls (MGSV)

I had never put myself through this misery of ranking the games in my favorite franchise ever! Thanks Eli for making my brain hurt :D

Favorite Games

MGS - I may be biased due to the nostalgia factor on this one. It's just that all of this game is carved in my brain, I remember all of it like I had just played it yesterday. A pioneer in the genre, an impecable soundtrack and a really compeling story that sets up the major characters of this franchise.

MGS3 - The relationship with The Boss is the heart and soul of this one. We get to play for the first time as the Legend! Big Boss. Boy did this man suffer...

MGSV - If only Konami did not interfere I believe this would have become the greatest Metal Gear ever. Game was clearly unfinished with the 2nd chapter forcing us to repeat quests at a higher difficulty level in order to move forward in the story. There was definitely a lot left on the cutting floor, just look at the missing footage from trailers and that unfinshed raw footage of episode 51. A technical marvel in terms of gameplay, so many possibilities to go through each mission we're given.

MGS4 - Cutscenegasm! Some great epic moments throughout the game, that microwave hall near the end, returning to Shadow Moses, Ray vs Rex, Liquid Ocelot final fight, Solid Snake meets Big Boss!

MGS2 - Stings to rank this so low, but for me all the others left a bigger mark. Dont get me wrong I effin love the game. Amazing theme song.

MGS: PW - Gotta be honest, dont remember much of the story here, it is where the concept of building a mother base is introduced, we get to know Chico and Paz.

Top 10 Characters

2. Solid Snake

3. Revolver Ocelot

4. Gray Fox

5. Psycho Mantis

6. Liquid Snake

7. Otacon

9. Quiet

10. Sniper Wolf

@ThereIsNoooSpoon

So we basically agree on the games, except for MGS2 which is indeed the most polarizing entry in the series. Thinking about it, I do put MGS slightly ahead of Snake Eater because dated graphics aside, it's otherwise an almost perfect game.

Oh, and btw 😀

Curious to know what were your reactions when you saw this?

My reaction was pure rage, frustration and sadness 😔

We can see that the team who built these cutscenes clearly love the game! They were recreated faithfully to match the original, and Konami goes and puts it in a F*****ING PACHINKO MACHINE 🤦‍♂️.

I just hope for a brighter future for the franchise, hopefully in the hands of SONY 🙏

Though I would like to see a modern remake of MGS1.  But I'll take this if they do it justice.

Hopefully that one will come after if this one is successful!

We have some nice screencaps and the dev team saying they are going for a faithful adaptation of the original, that gives me hope for this to be a great remake.

Like Silent Hill 2, this is a game that was pretty much perfect and didn’t need a remake. Though my gaming days are behind me, I’ll be sure to watch the full walkthroughs when they arrive on YT.

I’m especially curious to see how they plan on improving what is arguably the greatest collection of bosses battles in video game history.
