Ah, I see the witching hour approaches. Time for our European friends to pour a coffee and drop by, as our NA friends don their nightcaps.

And then there's @Fortis93 , who doesn't give a s.h.it what time it is, 'cause he's Australian mate! (and should have dropped in to this thread by now....🤔

1. @Grendel should know what this one is by now. ;)

2. "The Thing" (1982)

3. "Misery" (1990)

Not just my favourite horror film, but one of my favourite films (and books) of all time.

This is one of those movies that's firing on all cylinders from the moment it starts 'til the moment it ends.

A perfect film for me.

@Fortis93 I too love the exorcist and the novel. I'm also a big fan of exorcist 3 but havnt read Legion yet. Have you had a chance to check it out and if you have how does it compare to the film?

I've seen The Exorcist III, which I really enjoyed and think is quite an underrated psychological thriller.

I do have Legion by William Peter Blatty that I'm planning on getting to after I finish working my way through my current pile of books. I'm really looking forward to it.

William Peter Blatty was an excellent writer.

@Veum That is a beautiful edition of that book!

I also enjoy collecting some books. Here are three of my favorite editions:

The first one my wife got me for one of our anniversary’s and is my favorite book. (Movie was ok...)

The second and third i picked up from a Stephen King dealer and got resigned when i saw him at a local book shop.

Any one else here collect books too?

I never got into the blade comics, any recommendations? I love graphic novels and I collect and have a very large hardcover and omnibus collection. One of my all time favorite comic series and coincidentally is a vampire story is American Vampire by Scott Snyder. That and Hellboy which are some of the best stories and art ever written, all mignola does is pull from folklore and horror stories from every culture in the world.

@xSNAKExPLISSKENx

It’s been so long since I’ve read my Blade comics I actually don’t know which to recommend. I’ll have to go in me archive, revisit them & get back to you. I’ve heard nothing but positivity about American Vampire. I have It written down on my must read list. Lately my Hardcover & Omnibus collection has taken a back seat to all my premium buying. Once I get caught up on my movie collection (If such a thing is even possible 😅) then I’m going to be back to buying books like crazy. It seems like it has been an explosion of titles on hardcover so I can’t mess around to much.

I am so happy to see Near Dark, Fright Night, 30 Days of night and JC’s Vampires on here. Those are some of my favorite vampire flicks of all time and its so cool find like minded individuals that think the same! As a dad to 3 kids ive used fright night to be an introduction to horror over the years to my 2 oldest.

@Bones

It’s a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance, I knew we would cross paths eventually. I’ve seen a couple of your posts & knew you are a lover of Horror. It was only a matter of time under those circumstances, & I agree it’s definitely pleasant to be around like minded film fans. Fright Night is a great way to be introduced into Horror, I’ll say that was a very focused choice picking that title for the kids.

Good Evening my friends;  🙂

A lovely thread to get the blood flowing @xSNAKExPLISSKENx ! Ta!

I was lurking around the corner, taking a peek in here to discover what wonderful films folks were mentioning and I certainly have strong appreciation for all the ones discussed.

I. like most, have a difficult time selecting stand out fliks to populate a short selection. Especially with so many wonderful films over the decades that have thrilled me.

To simplify my choices, I usually try to categorize Sci-Fi , Horror, and Dark Fantasy uniquely.

Sci-Fi; has of course, a variety of incredible monsters in it, such as The Alien Xenomorph, The Predator Alien, heh, even Godzilla.

Horror; to me is usually of a human nature, be it esteemed slashers such as Halloween, Friday The 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street or more perverse films such as Saw, Hostel, et al...

Dark Fantasy; with predominantly a supernatural bent, is the category that enthralls me most and the ones I'll focus on for the purpose of this thread, as gauging by @xSNAKExPLISSKENx 's considerations, the type I think most have interest in here.

@Grendel

This is normally how I feel most comfortable ranking films. There is so many that fit more than one genre, on top of the fact that sometimes my ranking could end up the same for some movies even though they don’t match up quality wise. For example I like slashers & will grade them on an entertainment scale, but from a filmmaking perspective a lot of them are objectively bad.

As far as which sub genre I like most, I don’t think I favor one over the other. Least not off the top of my head. I believe I like & dislike enough movies in the genre/sub genre that I can’t really call any favorites. My girlfriend on the other hand though definitely prefers Dark Fantasy.

So, with gun to head, my three choices would be;

- The Exorcist:   I was fortunate in catching this iconic film in theatre prior to the avalanche of publicity it ultimately received. Raised a hard-core Roman Catholic, it was easy for me to become absorbed in the plot and dumbfounded by the effective use of mood and sedate effects that assuredly gave me lots to think about. It still holds the crown as my fave film of all time. Exorcist III was excellent as well (we do not talk about Exorcist II). Similarly themed films (The Omen, Rosemary's Baby, Blood On Satan's Claw, others) I have a great deal of time for and enjoy very much as well.

Just watched this last year for the first time. I plan to watch the sequels this upcoming Halloween season. So two is a thumbs down, but three brings it back home? I’ll keep all that in mind 😆

On 8/20/2020 at 7:08 PM, Grendel said:

- Suspiria: The 1977 Argento original. A very effective and terrifying descent into the intricacies of a Witches Coven. The style, the effective use of colour as a mood altering exploit, the incredible music by esteemed group "Goblin" all harmonizes for me into a chilling masterpiece. The remake is good, on its' own terms but not of equal calibre in my book. I have since been fortunate in tracking down a host of similarly themed films (Witchcraft) but this one opened the door for me.

I haven’t seen this yet, but I’ve been hearing a lot about the remake, so I’m going to check both of them out this year.

On 8/20/2020 at 7:08 PM, Grendel said:

- Dracula: (1931 Lugosi). Perhaps a bit stodgy and placid by today's standards but as a young lad first discovering the incredible worlds of Dark Fantasy on film for the first time, most assuredly the gateway drug that formed my appreciation for the genre in the first place. Some of you have mentioned other vampire films of outstanding merit, that I certainly adore as well.

All the ones I've mentioned here and a significant amount of others that assuage my soul's darker leanings, I've included in my collection threads;

"Grendel's Lair" and "Grendel's Deep Dungeon". 🥰

Thanks again for the Thread @xSNAKExPLISSKENx  😀

Dracula was a first time watch last year also. I plan to rewatch it again this 🧛‍♂️

What is everyone’s take on modern horror? While I've enjoyed the 2 conjuring movies, hereditary, a quiet place, the it movies, dr sleep and bone tomahawk (although the last one may as well be considered a western, I'm a sucker for a russel mustache and that ending) there hasnt been a ton that I've been super excited about. Maybe i wear rose colored nostalgia glasses, but a lot of the new stuff seems either really tame or over the top mean. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places?

@Bones

My take on modern Horror is on one hand it’s an exciting time because the genre seems to be back on an upswing with exciting new director’s with fresh takes to showcase. On the other hand I don’t always enjoy the fresh takes, I appreciate them, but I’m not always having as much fun watching the new stuff. Sometimes I feel like I’m either watching something that is run of the mill or I’m watching something that is extremely going in the opposite direction. It’s fresh & interesting but not something to rewatch. I, like you, sometimes wonder if I’m wearing tinted glasses to the past, or Is my opinion tainted a little due to less exposure growing up. I with much to view, & with further discussions will figure it out.

I’ve heard good things about this show, but I can’t start a new show until I catch up with The Walking Dead. My mother & me was watching it together & I fell off due to being busy with work & other stuff. I can’t have her fussing at me if she finds out I started watching something new 😅.

As I said above this thread is for all things horror, all sub genres and all mediums.

I also am a big fan of the classics, i think jump scares are a big modern horror trope that most of the time are only used when the filmmakers lack true imagination.

I appreciate the openness with discussion. Sometimes I run into film fans who only think of Horror in a singular manner overlooking all the layers the genre offers. Jump scares is definitely a tool that director’s should try & use less & less when it comes to modern film making. I get it, it’s a very effective tool to majority of film fans consuming mainstream horror. With that said constantly producing films using cheap techniques only hurts the genre in the long ran.

I love that I've found a home in the Psychos. At first i was hesitant and not sure if it was going to be my thing but everyone here is kind, welcoming and eager to discuss a hobby that is a blast (albeit an expensive one). Im not sure about other people here but having discussions with most friends about movies doesn't really go further than the latest marvel or dc flick out there. Here, discussions about obscure horror movies , weird little flicks like the ninth gate,  or mainstream like the new batman trailer (i haven't really liked a batman movie since the dark knight but this one has me excited now).

thank you @xSNAKExPLISSKENx for this thread, i haven't had this much fun since ive gone to the movie theater. I miss those things...

@Bones @Grendel @Veum @Hollywood E Rock @romain @Intentcoin

What would you all say is your most anticipated horror right now...?

I've gotta say, im pretty anxious to get my eyeballs on....

Since all the stuff with COVID-19 happened I honestly kinda stopped giving a whole lot of thought into upcoming releases because you know everything kept getting pushed back. For the sake of conversation though & off the top of my head I remember being greatly interested in

Candyman Considering the original scared me as a kid I’m very curious to see if this new one can do the same. I’ve enjoyed everything from Jordan Peele so far, even though he is in the producing chair for this project. From what I’ve heard he was very involved in the creative process along with the Director Nia DaCosta. I’m not familiar with her work personally, but I watched a couple YouTubers speak very positively about her. Also the movie is starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II & I’m a fan.

Army of the Dead This one is for Netflix & is directed by Zack Snyder. I think it’s supposed to be releasing either around Halloween or winter. I enjoyed his take on Dawn of the Dead so I’m excited to see what he has cooked up with this new project.

Antebellum The reason I was most excited for this one is because of Janelle Monae’ I’m a fan of her film work & her music so when I heard she was starring in a horror film my reaction was “Hell Yeah!”

Spiral: From the Book of Saw I haven’t finished the Saw series yet, but this movie caught my attention, because I heard Chris Rock came up with the idea. I like when artist decide to do something fresh & different. The results are often time very promising, so I’m going to knock the whole series out & wait for whenever this one is coming.

Lastly I’m adding Antlers, & Sputnik to my list, I didn’t finish either trailer, because I prefer not to watch trailers until after I’ve seen a movie, because I’ve been spoiled to many times. With that said from what I did see both movies have big potential in my book. Thanks for sharing because I wasn’t aware of them.

@RAK I don’t know why I feel like I didn’t already know you was a Horror fan. Either way good to see you in here!

@Hollywood E Rock Yea I enjoy horror, although I may not have as much as others. But like someone said earlier there are more bad than good. The only thing that I don’t like is the over the top Vomit Gore that seems to be so popular now days. I grew up as a 80’s kid if that tells you anything. But I just don’t get the people that like certain movies like Cannibal Holocaust, Todes Der King (Death of the Kong’s) I believe it’s what it’s called.
