Hi Folks;

I haven't really put devoted thought toward the forthcoming horror films but there are a few that have sparked my interest.

Before I begin, for those that may not be aware, there is an excellent USA web-site that is dedicated to espousing the latest info on Horror Films; be it new releases, discussions on older fare, new Blu-ray announcements or plans in the works for future endeavours.

The site is;

"Bloody Disgusting":

https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/

I usually visit once a day to discover what's in the pipe and it auto-renews as topics are presented.

For horror films and related topics, it's definitely worth your time to cruise.  🙂

(note: I'd suggest overlooking the comments sections in respective threads there, it's a pretty toxic hang-out but if you are bored, the morons can provide a few giggles).

So as for newly announced titles (understandably, release dates are in limbo currently);

*- We've mentioned "Sputnik" which I am certainly looking forward to.

*- "Antlers" certainly has my interest. About time we got a Wendigo story without silly & cheesy tropes.

*- I read today there is plans for an animated 'prequel' planned for "Peninsula"similar I suppose to how "Train To Busan" had the animated prequel "Seoul Station".

*- "The Pale Door" from Aaron Koontz has me excited. 'The Dalton Gang' of America's wild west days, meets a coven of witches when holing up to escape the law. Definitley getting vibes of "From Dusk til Dawn" from this one so I think it may be pleasantly satisfying.

- I will bypass Marshall's new flik 'The Reckoning" despite the fact it is focused on a topic I enjoy, "Witchcraft". It's supposedly set in the 1600's, in England and plans to be another grueling Witch-Hunter flik however it's publicized attraction is the gore factor and I have zero interest in torture porn.

- Eggers has a new film planned titled "The Northman" which will apparently be a "Viking seeks revenge film". Considering his work on "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse" I'm up for this.

- There's gonna be a "Scream 5". I may eventually pick up an amaray down the road but I sorta burned out after Scream 3, so....

- The Chinese have a new Kaiju in the works, titled "Abyssal Spider". I do enjoy many (not all) giant monster fliks, so I will at least check it out.

- Mickle, who gave us the underappreciated "Stake Land" is helming a new King adaptation for "From a Buick 8". Don't know much about this...yet. 🙂

And of course, both Blumhouse and 'Shudder' seem to have a great deal on their plates. Hope to see some of them.

Our esteemed Thread creator, @xSNAKExPLISSKENx, has mentioned that we need not limit our discussion to just "Horror Films" if a related subject is worth mention.

With that the case, I'd like to bring something novel to the discussion that some, may elect to pass over and others, consider.

For those of you who wondered "what's all this fuss about Anime lately", perhaps I can shed some light and still keep it topic relevant.

Anime is not a genre. It is an art style of descriptive story telling that uses animation as it's presentaion style.

Originating in Japan, it has blossomed into a world-wide phenomena that has seen similarly styled animated shows from a variety of countries, including South Korea, China, USA, England and a host of other places.

The genres within anime are as vast and diverse as any other show medium. Comedy, Slice-Of -Life, Sci-Fi, War, Historical, fantasy and yes, horror.

A LOT of horror.

There's of course the issue that not all anime receives dubs but for the most part, any anime released outside of Japan (and a lot inside) is at least subbed.

Many folk do not enjoying 'reading' a film and I understand that but I suggest you do yourself a disservice if you ignore films from other countries by which sub-titles are the only means of viewing.

So, a few titles in the Horror genre that are animated, most in fact being "Anime";

* - Hellsing: More accurately Hellsing:Ultimate. A Vampire super-hero vs a cadre of demons under the control of Nazis. Probably my strongest recommendation and a new complete set is now available at most Amazon web-sites.

* - Shiki: Whoo boy, it doesn't get any creepier than this. A plague hits a rural community in Japan turning people into a type of vampire. Creepy, disturbing, chilling, yeah, this one has all the adjectives. Another highly recommended show.

*- Vampire Hunter D.  As the title suggests, a lone hero sets out to purge a vampire cadre bent on taking over. And Like "Blade" he is one! Considered a "classic" in every true sense. highly regarded.

* - Elfen Lied: a future setting where subjects are manipulated to produce a terrifying weapon. Think "Resident Evil" but GOOD, nay, GREAT! Another "classic" that is incredibly well done.

* - Akira: more sci-fi perhaps than horror but the horror elements are very much in play throughout the story. Another top tier recommendation.

* - Blood: The Last Vampire: There was a live action adaptation of this that I thoroughly enjoyed but of course the anime fleshes out the story much better. There's a few sequels, Blood+ and Blood:C but they are increasingly difficult to find.

- Yamishibai; Japanese Ghost Stories: a portmanteau of shorts with title as subject. perhaps a bit staid for hard-core Horror enthusiasts but I quite enjoyed it.

- Pet Shop of Horrors: similar theme and style to the above but a bit more quirky. Only SD on Blu currently available.

*- Castlevania: Finally, a Western take on Anime. Based on the incredibly popular video games that have been out, well, forever, this animated telling of the story is receiving significant accolades on all fronts.

There's of course a host of others and I'm only scratching the surface but wanted to provide what I and I suggest many consider some of the best of the bunch.

YMMV...🙂

@Grendel

I also frequently visit bloody disgusting.

I haven't read too much in the way of anime or Manga. Its often just a tad to off the rails for me. But I do love Alita and Akira.

I am really big into graphic novels however. As I mentioned hellboy and American vampire are two of my favorites. I also love Lock and key and walking dead (at least as far as I've read). As well as Ennis run of hellblazer and preacher. And who can forget swamp thing!

I’m @RAK (Roy) I haven’t been around since the turn of the century like @Veum but grew up in the Slasher era, and it is one of my favorite horror style. I probably watch more Slasher then anything else.

If I had to quickly pick 3 (4) movies off the top of my head it would be.

1) Friday the 13th/Halloween depending on the day.

2) Psycho

3) Exorcist

Thanks for the Non Invite, and @SnakePlissken nice choice for a thread topic. Great way to find out about horror movies we probably haven’t heard of.

Hi @RAK, fancy you dropping by!  😉

Slashers eh. Well for someone who never put a great deal of effort into tracking them down, I seem to have a fair amount on my shelves.

Of course The "Halloween" Collector's box set. And, like you and others, have finally managed to secure an order for the forthcoming "Friday 13th" Collector's box set. 🙂

In the interim, I have the '8-pack' that was released, I think last year?

I also have a few eds of "Psycho" (1st) with the new EB ed on order, including the nicely put together 4-set with PET slip released by Universal.

I have a lovely slip-cased ed and the FYE Steel for "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". None of the sequels garnered my interest beyond mild amusement.

I have a 5 film dvd collection of the "Nightmare On Elm Street" films and the 1st on Blu. I've heard chat regarding a collector's set being released (by Shout?) I'll no doubt pick up.

I also purchased the Arrow CEs for "Hills Have Eyes" (1&2) originals and the nice 2-pack of the re-makes, the first of which I quite enjoyed.

Perhaps "The Firefly Family" films would fit the slasher bill. It's where I have them filed at least. heh.

As for stand-alones, I have a few scattered about my collection that titles escape me right now but I know I've enjoyed many of them. 🙂

I'd appreciate hearing thoughts from a 'connoisseur' of this genre @RAK, so please share thoughts on obscure titles that you found worthwhile if you would be so kind.

Cheers buddy.

A very knowledgeable friend that has provided a wealth of info regarding Horror Film Media Books being released in Germany.

I do hope he drops by. 😀

edit: Possibly @Mrs.Robinson as well? C'mon in friend!  😀

I have the Arrow Ed of HHI 1&2, and Mediabook’s for the remakes. I unfortunately do not have the Halloween Boxset, I was to late to the game for that. And I’m not paying what they want for it. Yes I have the F13 Boxset on preorder from Shout, and that lovely Psycho Boxset that that I just received a week ago from Germany W/the 4K Steelbook on preorder. I also have the NMOES Snap Case DVD set, and a few TCM Steelbooks.

But what is this your referring to:

I also have a few eds of "Psycho" (1st) with the new EB ed on order, including the nicely put together 4-set with PET slip released by Universal.

Speaking of slasher’s, up for Vieum’s viewing party now, we have on our plate:

🎞️

BLUE UNDERGROUND

LUCIO FULCI’S

THE NEW YORK RIPPER 🔪

A blade-wielding psychopath is on the loose, turning The Big Apple bright red with the blood of beautiful young women. As NYPD detectives follow the trail of butchery from the decks of the Staten Island Ferry to the sex shows of Times Square, each brutal murder becomes a sadistic taunt. In the city that never sleeps, he’s the killer that can’t be stopped!

Hi @RAK ;

The UK site, 'EverythingBlu' released a very nice spec ed of the original "Psycho" not long ago. I thought you were aware of it?  😟

Sadly, it is sold out at this time.

The 4-pak I'm referring to is this one;

(scroll down on that page for a nice presentation of contents).

It has a lovely PET slip over the Blu case, that provides the presentation shown above.

I hope I did not mislead you?

I have the original "TtDS" (1977, Pierce) but have yet to see the sequel (2014, Gomez-Rejon ). I enjoyed the original though the limited budget is evident. 🙂

I have no knowledge of Viking Vengence. The Town That Dredded Sundown but I'd be curious if it is at all related to;

 "The Norseman"  '78 version, also by Pierce?

I have not seen it either but reading a short synopsis, makes it sound like the plotline for Nispel's "Pathfinder" (2007) starring Karl Urban and the indomitable Clancy Brown (legend!) that I very much enjoyed! 🤩

I believe it’s just an original movie, not connected to anything.

The one on the Left is a Shout Factory release of the original movie. It’s been mentioned that it inspired the movie Halloween. The one on the Right is a Sequel/Remake not really sure yet, still have to watch it.

Ah! Thanks @RAK !

"Viking Vengeance" has the title "The Head Hunter" it seems, in NA.

I recall coming across mention of this a while back and as it gives me a bit of a "Valhalla Rising" vibe, I think I need to track it down. 😀

Thanks for the suggestion buddy.

Ah yes, I knew that and forgot to mention that. So you do know of this then?
