A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education, or maintaining a historical record Such films were originally shot on film stock—the only medium available—but now include video and digital productions that can be either direct-to-video, made into a TV show, or released for screening in cinemas. "Documentary" has been described as a "filmmaking practice, a cinematic tradition, and mode of audience reception" that is continually evolving and is without clear boundaries.

Some ground breaking films made under moniker " a documentary"

Why are we simultaneously attracted to and repelled by the things that scare us the most? “Primal Screen”attempts to understand. In this first Shudder Original, acclaimed filmmaker Rodney Ascher (Room 327, The Nightmare) explores the pop culture that left dark impressions on us as children. Ascher asks real people to look back at pop-culture artifacts that traumatized them in their youth and describe the effect they had on their lives. A singular hybrid of documentary and horror, it’s time to stare into the PRIMAL SCREEN.

A chronological look at The Doors, focusing on lead singer, Jim Morrison (1943-1971), from the formation of the band in 1965, it's first gigs, and first album, to Morrison's death, after years of alcohol and drug use. Along the journey, we see archival footage of rehearsals, performances, and private moments including a Miami concert resulting in Morrison's arrest and trial for indecency. His love of the spotlight, his desire to be a poet, and his alcohol-fueled mood swings lead to a back and forth between public and private desires, successes, and failures. The band's music plays throughout.

The Best document of The Doors ever.

Lot's of new material. HD format. Story focuses on Jim on more than others yes. But this is how it should be done. With love and care. Digging deep in archives.

Thumbs up from "old" The Doors  fan ?5 outta 5 !

Quite simply the best music doc ever made, as far as I'm concerned.

I will also give a nod to Rammstein Amerika, which although disc one is a show, disc 2 is a 2 hour doc on the entire history of the band and is exceptionally well put together featuring a full history of the bands they came from, archive footage going back to their first shows, interviews from stars around the world like Mr Manson etc. Its worth the price of the edition alone, and you get the added bonus of a stunning show at Madison Square Gardens with it.

@nefilim

It is the best ever documentary I have ever seen .

I got the Teachers a copy to upload onto the School data base as it was a teaching ade for schools in the U.K.

The kids School cover the topic , some much to our boys upset some classmates totally disruptive in the lesson . IT engaged them in a way that nothing before had .

@psychoscot yes sad however how the survivors came back to like with the simple things that we take for granted is humbling .

Yep.

Will look that one up.

I'm kind of addicted to WWII stuff. Inc. these. Own lots and lots of books (non fiction) plus have interviewd  many real veterans (others than relatives). A bit off topic ... sorry.
