Well here we are again, the great debate mentioned on many threads over the years and were not on about brexit everyone has had enough of that.

so here it is the great open versus sealed what do you do?

what do you think should happen and what are your reasons, why you do what you do tell us your thoughts :D

please discuss it all to your hearts content and remember everyone is different and has there own reasons for things.

as they say different folks for different strokes.

i start this off im firmly in the open camp, i dont believe in buying something leaving it sealed to gave dust. i have a wallet for that.

im a collector and like to see in every detail finishes, colours of paint, embossing and thoughly examine my steels. also actually watch the films that are inside them. which for me is the whole point of buying it in the first place.

now lets see what the rest of you have to say.....

start off with a few tags to kick this all off

Camp "Sealed!" :D

I started 10 years ago and back then it was some kind of investment along with the joy of collecting. Back then some bare naked Asian steels were worth 500-1000 Euros so I couldn't bring myself to open them....and it stuck with me until today.

Nowadays I do not see them as investments anymore because this times are long gone but still...

I open some but not many and not very rare/expensive ones

OPEN THEM THANGS UP!

I'm a collector and want to appreciate every detail of what I'm collecting. I understand there's no going back once that seal is removed...but I've gotta release these glorious slips from the confines of the One-Click box and get my touchy-feely on. Otherwise, I'd just save my money and watch these dudes do unboxing videos all day.

Open all the way!
@Basil perhaps we should make a list divided into 3 camps: OPEN, SEALED & ON THE FENCE for those who, like @deckard99, ‘eventually’ open their editions (when does that happen, I wonder...on their deathbed?) and those who open some Premiums but keep others sealed (opening a regular amaray but keeping a Premium of the same movie sealed puts you firmly in the ‘sealed’ camp).

The list can be updated each time a member posts his affiliation. Should make for an interesting thread.

I'm in the on the fence camp .

Why because one of the few times it shows I'm a girl other than the  boobs and girl plumbing 😁👍 is I find it almost impossible to make a decision.

You only need to find someone who has known me a relatively short amount of time OR a Team member to know what a dithering wreck I become when having to make a decision

Courage yes as the gory horror stories of loose or missing disks or bits .

So if in in the mood and have time to savour I open.

Otherwise it'll wait  😁😁❤❤

What a great subject @Basil

Me and me good pal @RileyLad have had many of conversations regarding this. I certainly have a lot more stuff sealed then open but I know someday everything will eventually be opened.. need to rip that seal and see what beautys await inside the box.

So I would say at the moment I'm on the fence but they will be opened eventually. I don't care about value loss etc...

I can understand keeping the steel book sealed but the slip or one click should definitely be opened. There are more things to experience opening it yourself than you could watching a unboxing video like feeling the textures or that new smell or how would u know nothing is missing or damaged? Keeping them sealed doesnt increase there value either, people just think it does the plastic isnt the packaging the slip itself is and as long as that's kept in good condition then it's worth just as much as sealed in my opinion. The whole thing is actually annoying because there is no blue book for this stuff so if we keep deciding as collectors to only place value on sealed, people who might want to sell something open will be talked down on price because it's not sealed or it wont sell altogether even if it's in better condition than the sealed one which you would never know its condition. It's just plastic it can still be scratched or dented you still have to trust someone selling sealed as much as someone selling open.

Why did you have to complicate things even more? 🥺
So I guess we put you in the ´Open’ camp?!

I used to be very firmly in the sealed crew!

I agree with @PRIAPISM here as I too remember importing Asian/Japan steels (mainly from evil bay) and used to see these as a investment. Sad thing is that when you have been collecting so long you see there value depreciate as time goes/technology moves forward.

Thanks to meeting new members with enthusiastic attitudes like my pal @Robertm89 - and also the fact we are now spoilt by by these amazing premiums, I feel there are things I have purchased that I can never part with so I have decided to start to open a few editions and enjoy them. Mainly opening OC boxes to look at the single editions inside.

Hdzeta are my favourite retailer, but one issue I have is I could never open one where the lenti is loose in front of the slip. Even if I put them in a plastic protector it bothers me with the lenti being loose. Another point brought to my attention by @Pbsw23 the other day is the slip opens on the wrong side - this would really bothered me if I opened them.

So I don’t know where @R1s1ngs0nwants to put me on the list.

I’m guess I’m 90% Sealed crew, planning on opening a few more.... And opened 10% 🤣

Final answer 😁

Hey, thanks for the shot-out @Basil I am definitely in the OPEN them up camp @R1s1ngs0n

They are meant to be enjoyed, and I am not going to enjoy them sealed. I only buy premiums for movies that I want to re-watch, so I'm going to have to open them for the disc! If the steel/premium is sold out or an old release, I will only try to buy an open copy.

For me, if I leave them sealed that's saying I plan on selling them making me less of a collector, and more of a re-seller. But as I said in the Spiderverse thread, I totally get why some people want to keep them sealed.

If you're collecting as an investment though, you're probably going to be disappointed unless you sell them relatively soon after release. Media format, trends, popularity of movies are fickle and something thats popular and desirable today probably wont be tomorrow.

The biggest joy from receiving a premium release or just a regular release is undressing the item & witnessing what you have in all it’s glory!!!

giphy.gif

You get the full experience of a box set when you open it up! The reason I purchase is because of the extra goodies! If I keep my sets closed I’ll never experience the full detail of the set! If I keep my sets closed I’ll never be able to fully appreciate the time, & the effort that was put into producing the sets. All the detail is trapped & the experience to enjoy the movie you love in a new way is lost by keeping items sealed forever. I do admire a collector who doesn’t open their sets. It takes a certain level of discipline to have such beautiful items as this community does & not open them up!

I'd say maybe 80% sealed? At least I always open the boxsets 🤣

If I have multiples of the same movie I may open them, bonus point if they have at least French subtitles so I can watch it.

(Last one I opened is Brightburn lenti weet and I watched the movie)

But most of the time I get the disc or a simple version of the steelbook when available to avoid opening premiums 😅

For the blufans if I have the 1/4 I don't open anything unless I really want to admire it (ie. Thor Ragnarok 🥰

il y a 4 minutes, Veum a dit :

@Benoit46 I’m curious, how do you then watch one of those movies you buy as a Premium exclusive... are you double-dipping to a lesser expensive one to watch? 🤔

even if I open 98% of the editions do not have VF and the little VF is a HORRIBLE VFQ ... 🤢

so I take the editions by looking at photos on Mediapsychos 😜

and simply buy in France the movies that I absolutely want to watch  several times 🤷‍♂️

I'm a 99% sealed guy unless I can get a second copy for cheap to open....and cheap almost never happens.

My reasons for keeping things sealed makes no sense even to my self.  I buy the ones I buy because of the different cool art and treatments, but then I don't open them because what am i gonna do?, go "ooohhh and aaahhhh" and put back in box.  But then why'd I buy it in the first place?!

Between the cheap availability of a digital copy, the terrible durability of the card board slipcases, and how much opening hurts the potential value I choose not to open.
