True Love, Or Shiny And Flashy?

Recommended Posts

Just curious what the general consensus is today with members and these premium releases. Basically, are there any regrets with any purchases made because of style over substance? For me, I've been hunting and grabbing movies I adore and admire. From WCL's 2001: A Space Odysessy to The Blu Collection release of "Truth" (Yes, I'm the one that bought and enjoy that one! LOL) The one I kinda regret getting was a blind buy of the giallo film The New York Ripper. I was lured by a YT review pointing out all the goodies in it and it's lenticular cover. I hunted for it, and paid too much direct from MVD for it (turned out it was sitting on Amazon for half the price!) So it's probably going to be my only "giallo" film I'll ever get, and the packaging and extras are nice and informative at least. But if somebody offered me $40 for it, I wouldn't think twice about selling it.

So are there movies you may have got that you kinda regret after? Caught up in the hype of packaging and limited amount, only to get it and say "what am I doing with this?" For me, my big joke to myself is "if I ever wind up buying Dude, Where's My Car? for either $1 or a WCL Limited Release w/Lighted cover - I know I've crossed the line!". Is anyone else like that, or is the majority "Buy, buy, buy!". Not that there's anything wrong with that either. I'm getting caught up in the hype over John Wick and The Avengers et al as they do look great! But have I ever been, or will ever be a fan of those movies? I highly doubt it.

@StevenWest

I once also dared to ask a similar question and I got two type of responses:

1. Someone on this forum who shall remain unnamed basically told me it was an insulting question.

2. I got totally ignored (perhaps due to the fact that I was new back then or maybe because people thought I was being sarcastic).

You have to understand that the people you’re dealing with here, although very nice and accommodating, are for the most part complete lunatics when it comes to Premium collecting.
Whether they think the movie is good (or have even seen it) is irrelevant - they just got to have that Aquaman 1-click so their Blufans/Manta/insert retailer collection is complete and can be proudly displayed (sealed of course) for all the other lunatics to behold.

Now don’t get me wrong, although I do not share this particular philosophy I am true and well a certified lunatic, although of a different kind (OCD more related to how I store/catalog/display my collection).

Still, it’s the best place on the net (besides Pornhub) so enjoy it while you can.

Cheers

I'm definitely a lunatic (dare I say psycho? 🤪) I don't think I've regretted anything in the way of premiums. They are like works of art to me, each special in it's own way, and I don't buy them unless I like the movie. There may be a few where a nicer edition came out later by another retailer but that never bothers me. I only overlap on a couple and if I want to I can always sell them at a later date for what I paid (or more), so not a problem. I've HAVE regretted buying some mass market amarays that were later replaced by awesome steelbooks and/or premiums. Those aren't really worth anything, so I usually donate them to my local salvation army.

✌️ Hello @StevenWest @deckard99 @R1s1ngs0n

Being a Pure Psycho myself I haven’t regretted buying a premium release yet. The reason for that is two reasons. I mostly buy movies I really enjoy & I believe are worthy of having a premium release of. For example I liked the movie Olympus Has Fallen but not enough to want to own a premium release of the movie (if one was to exist). For me to change my mind the release of said movie would have to be pretty spectacular. On the other hand though I absolutely love The Terminator & Terminator 2 so I have a few copies of those movies & I’ll purchase more copies if I like the design of the release.

Sometimes I will buy a release blindly, not seeing a movie first but I don’t regret those purchases either because I know the risk. Sometimes it’s fun to roll the dice on a nice release of a movie that I haven’t seen. The only time I can think that I find myself regretting a purchase or really being annoyed that a made a purchase is when I impatiently or (just not being informed of what’s coming out) buy a regular release from Best Buy or Wal-Mart thinking that is my only option of owning the movie. Then that same movie comes out months later in a beautiful premium.

Sometimes under that circumstance My reaction is

All this is fascinating but it still doesn’t explain why you own a steelbook of Fifty Shades Of Grey.

@R1s1ngs0n

Because I enjoy schlock from time to time! Those movies that are so ridiculous that they end up being entertaining for reason the creators didn’t intend! The Fifty Shades Trilogy is high quality schlock!

Thanks guys! So I guess I'm one of you! :) Usually what I do is buy a 2nd DVD of say Isle Of Dogs, and find I really like it. Then when I caught Black Barons release - take that DVD back to the store with others and get a buck or whatever for it.  Looking at my Blu Collection of "Truth", damn - it's really nicely done! The quality these Premium guys put in is really something else! The 1 Clicks though I'm really torn on. The conservative side in me says "just buy the ONE you like!", while the psycho side says "get 'em all!". As much as I like "Let The Right One In", I'm pretty happy with the single one I got. But something like "Her" that's impressive artwork on each! And when my cash flow was decent, I was tempted. Now it's a bit strapped - I'm STILL tempted! LOL Thought their might be something wrong with me, but good to see I'm not alone here.  ;)

IF I love it I buy it ..in multiple 😁😁 not much care with the format .

That's where MY Psycho comes in 😁😁🤭🤭 .

Premiums are great no denial in that only the never ending treadmill of Marvel and  Star Wars blah blah blah .

Yes the ones I regret is a strong word  are the bare steels that with a little bit of restraint on what you do buy elsewhere you can get a real mind blowing premium  set .

Slip goodies Collectors  card the lot and sometimes way before a UK realise is on the horizon 😁 .

I cherry pick unless its a MUST BUY that's the off the wall stuff I love that is never gonna get a premium because its too well quirky or weird like ME 🤭😁🤗🤣🤣🤣💋

@StevenWest great thread @R1s1ngs0n where , when  , who , what 😁💋💋💋💋

I've lost the plot AGAIN 🤣🤣

Are the steelbooks nice at least?

@R1s1ngs0n

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being sh!t & 10 being Hell Yeah, I’ll give those steelbook designs a 6 out of 10. Each one has inside artwork so that’s a plus for me. Can’t stand when steelbooks don’t have inside artwork!

No inside art is irksome  have to admit .

Armageddon  , Die Hard , Lethal Weapon  , Con Air

Zavvi from a few years ago although relatively cheep no inside art felt like a wet fart 🧐🧐🤢🤢.

So after that no more no inside art 😁💋💋

Something that I feel  is forgotten sometimes is the work the retailers put in with these realises .

Very often these can be in development YEARS . YES YEARS .

Before they even hit our radar .

Then the excitement and fun begins as we choose  or peruse our way to a decision 😁❤❤.

One i got most excited about was  Manta Lab Constantine  😁😍😍😍😍

NO WAY will I be parted from that epic one click and Lenti edition .

Just to clarify, I was a virgin here on MP but I've been screwed plenty of times before on eBay so I'm not really new to the Premium game.
