Top 10 Movie Stunts

Ok so before I dive into my list, a little introduction:

Car movies/chases bore me to death...and therefore car stunts leave me pretty much indifferent (with very few exceptions). Not because the stunt itself doesn't look dangerous or complicated but mostly because we almost never get to see the actual person (in this case, stuntman) driving the car - we don't really get a visual sense of the danger the character is facing while performing the stunt since he is 'protected' by the shell of the vehicle.

For me an epic stunt doesn't necessarily need to defy the laws of physics, like a semi truck flipping (you know which movie I'm talking about).

For me the best stunts are those who are not only imaginative in concept and execution, but those who actually serve the plot (meaning they are a natural result of the story's progression).

Which means 007 is going to feature heavily on my list 😁

1. Moonraker - Bond skydives without a parachute. If the Bond movies were to be judged solely based on their pre-title sequences, Moonraker would almost certainly be in everyone's top 3.

The fact this stunt dates back to 1979 (forty freakin' years ago!) is even more mind boggling. I remember seeing it for the first time on VHS and thinking this was going to be the best Bond ever...sadly I was proven wrong (but that's another story).

2. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol - Climbing the Burj Khalifa. As much as I dislike Tom Cruise, I have to admit the man has big cojones (which makes sense since he's pretty crazy to begin with). That stunt is the perfect example of a key plot device that serves to advance the movie. Plus, the sense of danger it conveys remains practically unparalleled.

3. The Spy Who Loved Me - Mountain cliff ski jump (this time with a Union Jack parachute, no less). This one is a classic and usually tops lists for greatest ever Bond stunts.

The moment Bond opens the parachute to reveal the Union Jack just before it transits into Carly Simon's delicious 'Nobody does it better' must have been an experience no one at the theaters was about to forget.

4. Live And Let Die - Crocodile bridge escape. Say what you will about good ol' Rog as Bond but there's no doubt his outings featured the best stunts in the series. In his first tenure as Bond, he's left by the baddies on a little rock in the middle of a swamp filled with dozens of crocodiles, eagerly advancing towards what seems like a nice English breakfast. The stunt itself is far from being flashy and that's the genius of it - it looks like an actual person could actually pull it off (with insane amounts of luck, of course).

5. Inception - Hallway fight. Possibly the most visually arresting sequence on this list. It's not so much the stunt work that's impressive but rather the ingenious idea behind it.

6. On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Piz Gloria escape. Famed German skiing champion Willy Bogner is responsible for shooting the ski chases that feature heavily in this Bond outing (a first in cinema). The ground breaking cinematography, coupled with 007 having to use only one ski contribute to create a heart pounding action sequence which remains one of the franchise's highlights.

7. The Raid - Baddie landing back first on stair rail. I will never get tired of seeing this one. I remember the first time I saw it I literally had my jaw on the floor (ok, not really) before I started laughing like crazy for 5 minutes. Looks so painful but hilarious at the same time - straight out of a Looney Tunes cartoon.

8. Casino Royale - Parkour chase. The only reason this one isn't higher up on the list is because it feels like it belongs in a Jason Bourne movie rather than a Bond film. Bond is physically capable, but he's no Bourne. Otherwise, it's a thrilling sequence.

9. Ong Bak - Street chase. The whole sequence is a succession of amazing physical feats performed by the impressive Tony Jaa.

10. The Man With The Golden Gun - Corkscrew car jump. Good ol' Rog does it again! If I have to include a car stunt then it's got to be this one (even with that ridiculous sound effect).

My apologies in advance to all Jackie Chan fans out there. I've only seen one of his earlier movies (Battle Creek Brawl, which I love btw), so while I know his Police Story antics are worthy of every stunt lover's top ten list, I didn't include any since I didn't see those films.
